Harpers Hall         Logo
Harpers Hall makes its home in the San Francisco South Bay Area and Central California Coast. Our purpose is to promote an appreciation of the folk harp, to cultivate its living musical tradition, and to preserve the fun and magic of the harp for members and for the general public. To that end, we hold numerous events throughout the year, from harp jams to house concerts, festival performances to yearly weekend retreats. Journey through Harpers Hall to discover an enchanting world of harpers and learn their songs and their stories. Here you will meet many of the revelers, see the various lands they travel to, and find out how to join.

Gatherings

We gather every 3rd Sunday of the month, unless otherwise indicated on the Calendar. Join us in sharing tunes, meeting other harpers, and enjoying culinary delights! Each gathering will feature either a workshop (free of charge) or a rehearsal for an upcoming event (open to all harpers) or both! Further details are published in our newsletter, The Reel Fling.

Retreats

Excerpt from a typical retreat: "...Saturday night, with Rise Up Singing, was yet another fun Venture weekend. We had our mini-micro retreat with a small group of harp revelers. While the food met the high "culinary society" expectations, the board was groaning all weekend long in true Harpers Hall tradition. The hottub was visited... and harps were played. After a walk in the Redwoods, the Happy Hiking Harpers Club was formed, and plans made for future expeditions for Harping in the Redwoods. The beach was visited, and we escorted the sun out of the sky, tucking it in safely for the night. We failed to tuck ourselves in, making music far into the wee hours (OK, some of us stayed up till the wee hours!). All in all, it was a wonderful weekend, keeping alive the tradition of having fun at Venture Retreats"..Elaine Berger

New AdVenture at Camp Cazadero!
In 2019, we  moved our "Retreat-from-the-World" to Camp Cazadero, just north of Guerneville, CA, and we continue the tradition of having fun for up to 5 nights! In addition to sharing music in informal harp circles and jam sessions, we are now including a few fun workshops. 2019 workshops included "How to Participate in a Jam Session" and "Build Your Own Cardboard Harp." Here are a few photos from the 2019 retreat:

We also retreated at Camp Cazadero in 2020, but Camp Cazadero is closed now, so we are looking for a new retreat location for future retreats!

Due to COVID-19, our 2021 retreat was online!
We had 25 or more retreaters, and using Zoom breakout rooms, were able to stay in the main Zoom room to play along while on mute, or move to the "Kitchen/Dining" room, the "Jamulus Jam session" room, the "Arts and Crafts" room, or one of the "Visiting/Chatting" rooms throughout the afternoon. We'll try this again sometime soon, and look forward to 2022 for another in person retreat. Eight of us experimented with using Jamulus so we can play live together, and will try that again in the near future. Here are a few photos from our Virtual Retreat!

Scottish Games

In concert, Harpers Hall features solo and ensemble performances by professional and advanced players and harp playing by its dynamic 15-25 person "Harp Orchestra". Harpers Hall performances are magical occasions, combining beautiful harp music with lively dialogue on the folk harp and its rich history. Offstage, Harpers Hall folk are always eager to demonstrate their instruments and to share information. Our performances commonly inspire audiences to take up the harp themselves!

Probably the most involved undertaking of Harpers Hall is participation in the annual Caledonian Club Scottish Gathering and Games at Pleasanton. Thanks to the harpers at these events many children and adults gain their first exposure to the harp. Other annual performances have included the Loch Lomond Games at Ben Lomond, the Caledonian Club Sacramento Valley Scottish Games & Gathering at Woodland.
